Photographs, 1884.

Forty-one photographs of areas in North Carolina where the 44th Massachussets Infantry Regiment was located from August 1862 to May 1863. Reed served with the regiment during this period and revisited North Carolina in 1884 when the photographs were taken. Reed's description of this trip, "North Carolina Revisited," is Chapter 12 of the Record of the Service of the Forty-Fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in North Carolina August 1862 to May 1863 (Boston, 1887). Thirty-two photographs were published in this work, twenty-six of them in this collection. Locations in New Bern appear most often. Other communities include Washington, White Hall, Rawle's Mill, Kinston, and Goldsboro. A few are of the same scene, the only difference being that they have been cropped differently. With the information folder filed with the collection are descriptive texts of the 32 pictures that were published.
